Tue, April 18, 2006 - 6:21 PMwell I'd like to try one out, but I dont think I will get the opportunity for awhile, until I can try it, I really cant say one way or another but it looks cool. -

Looks like a good control set (perhaps a bit bulky?)
The software says "Arkaos", but seems to resemble Motion Dive... must be NEW -

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Wed, April 19, 2006 - 3:47 PMyea I think the ArKaos team custom tailored the software (or maybe just skinned the existing software) to fit the device, but this is just my guess.

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Wed, April 19, 2006 - 10:40 AMIt sucks that there really is no place that you can demo stuff like this, you know? I mean, I might be wrong, but even when I was trying to just go check out a V4 somewhere, I couldn't find any place in SF that had it set up..

Yes, that's difficult! Few places sell our gear except by special order...
But that's what we have to deal with, being part of a cutting-edge artform!
I'm considering buying an Entrancer, but the decision would be so much easier if I could try one out for a while... -

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Sun, April 23, 2006 - 6:35 PMWe were lucky enough to have an experienced VJ, Roly Skender, mentor us when we were starting out, so we could try out a V4 before we bought one - it was the quality of the lumakeying/fade combination that sold us. That's pretty much the only thing we use it for, but it's worth it for that, considering how we work (as a pair).
In Melbourne, there's an awesome weekly VJ get-together run by this forum's gracious host, Jean Poole, where VJs Show & Tell in a low-key workshop sort of way. I think it's had a really tangible effect on the quality of VJing in Melbs - the VJs there are so experimental, and mutually supportive. plugnplay.skynoise.net/
We're trying to start a similar thing in our own city, when we can find an appropriate venue. Until then, we do demo's when we can to try to give people access to the equipment as part of a working VJ rig. It's a lot better than looking at something in a store, out of context and with a Sales Rep who's never actually used the thing. As Franz said though - even that's difficult to find in a lot of places!
Perhaps if you can find someone who uses a NuVJ, Entrancer, whatever, in your city - email them and ask if you can come along to a gig and see it in action. Buy them a few drinks and they'll probably be happy to show off their equipment. The advantage of this being a cutting-edge artform is that there's not (yet) a lot of competition, the whole Industry's still at the stage where it's in everyone's interest to collaborate and build awareness. The more VJs there are in our city, the better we'll have to be - which is a good thing :) -

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Thu, May 4, 2006 - 6:21 PMI've already reserved mine from djmart.com...second person to pre-order so I should get it pretty soon after they receive inventory which should be sometime in July. I had been looking at several controllers and like the direction numark is going in with their new consoles. Was also looking at Livid Union, but will mess with Arkaos first since it is supposed to come packaged with the NuVJ. I'm pretty new to this whole concept and am looking forward to producing and mixing video for live events.

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 12:33 PMI have NUVJ. I was excited when it came out. It has major bugs and Numark refuses to return it. The controller crossfader moves on it's own. I am using a mac duo g4 and you cannot place clips into the pads from finder. The jog scratch is really touchy and non usable. The tempo faders have little room to speed up clips or, slow down, reverse. Sometimes the effects do not even work. The tunnel effect usually craps out on the first loop. The luminous key hardly or, never works. The controller stays on even after quiting the app. The USB midi seems to send messages on it's own. USB2 seems to work better but, still sends midi on it's own. If your docs are built and and any (I mean any) changes are made, it erases the documents and you need to build from scratch again. It quits on it's own quite frequently. It's a cheap device. I have had numerous problems with my computer since installing it and had to service my apple 2 times. Power issues, drives, video cards and firewire have all been replaced on my computer since installing this NUVJ. My computer checks out both times with apple and ATI. This controller has cost me more money than it is worth. Numark refuses to return it or, replace it saying my computer is old? It's an issue with my computer. Well, it's not according to apple techs. Even tho it more than doubles the specs. It's a shame. I had high hopes for it. What do you expect from NUMARK? Plus the clips they provide are pretty useless. -

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 11:00 AMI'm an avid user of Arkaos, but I passed on the NuVJ and over all I am disappointed with it. I did not have any of the problems you speak of on my iMacG5 or my Core2Duo PC, sorry you are having such issues. I can say that if you are using any upgrade CPUs or cards in your oledr G4, you can expect some problems. The G5 or the Intel is the way to go, get rid of the G4 for any Arkaos or Numark software. They are correct, its old technology and the software was not written for it. It may say it will work, but talk is cheap in the software business.
I think what Arkaos needs to do is create something like Rewire for Video and use NuVJ as a virtual Mixer and let you run full versions of Arkaos and other vj software and plug it into the NuVJ. I liked the generators in NuVJ, and when combined with FXs you can have soem real creative fun with those but the method and limited layer blending is a major drawback for NuVJ. Its why I don't use Resolume that much.
I have developed 100's of tricks with Arkaos, all of which make up my style. I know for fact you can not do most of them live in any other programs. I have some comps that are as many as 20 layers at the same time. Only arkaos will let you do that. Given this deep user understanding of Arkaos, I was very put off by the limited nature of the NuVJ. Its a toy, not a tool. -

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 11:18 AMWell, My computer is only 4 years old and more than doubles the recomended specifications on the NUVJ website and box. In fact, they say a 867mghz single processor can run NUVJ! I would love to see how that works! It is a toy and not a tool. And numark are pricks who refuse to admit they sell crap merch. This is not the first numark product I have issues with. Even gemini and american dj could have done better. -

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 10:04 AMI've had NuJV since May and love it. Technically, it's been solid with my system (horse of a system - dual core, 2 gig Ram, 512mb VRAM), but I've had a few crashes with the system when I've been attempting to scratch some video, but that might be more of an issue with the codec that I'm using.
I love the controller, and for live VJing, it's amazing. It does have it's limitation, and I'd love to see some progression with the software from better effects to better control over some of the video. I'd like to be able to put in starting and stoping points in the timeline.
I have tried it with another one of my lower end laptops and it was not as responsive. The bare minimum of hardware requirements for most software applications will almost always prove to run, but suffer greatly in performance.

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Fri, September 14, 2007 - 1:01 PMIt's still a great machine and does many things above and beyond most computers to this day. I have used it on other computers and it still sucks. NUVJ is a cheap toy. I can't see any promoter taking a vj serious with this application. Modul8 works good on my mac. Arkaos works good. NUVJ was not thought out properly. -

Re: What does everyone think of the NuVJ?
Sat, September 15, 2007 - 6:43 AMWe've used the NuVJ for a couple of shows lately (with other equipment as well). While it does have some issues and limitations it worked great. Our hope is that the problems that it does have will be addressed in future releases. It often takes awhile to work the kinks out of new tools.
