Something very different…The KARAS AMV by the Opposite of Faith featuring DJ Quest

What you are about to see is an evolution in film sound design far different from anything you‘ve heard before…

The Karas AMV

Anime Music Videos (AMV) are created by hobbyist who take a popular song and add it on top of existing Japanese Animation footage to give the Video a new and more exciting feel. The Karas AMV was created around the idea of taking found sources and samples from existing Japanese Animation titles and combining it with performances highly skilled musicians and Turntablist to recreate the film sound effect work creating a frenetic, hyper real approach to sound design. After the original sound track was removed, the music (Bass performance and Ableton sounds by J of The Opposite of Faith) was written and recorded into Ableton Live- every other voice, movement, moment and mood was created on Turntables and through Turntable mixing techniques (cutting, scratching, transforming) while performing to the video. The approach was expanded by having the Turntablist (DJ Quest and DJ Cplus) manipulating the Dave Smith Evolver and the Korg Kaoss Pad through the DJ mixers and MIDI control. Performances (Bass, Turntables) were record through the EMU 1616 into Ableton Live and warped, edited and combined there. The final mixdown was performed in Ableton Live and Mastered using Summit Audio Tube EQs.

This is the first in series of creative Music/Video/Art Projects by the Opposite of Faith-creativity without compromise…

Tribe VJ's - Introduce Yourself!

I thought it would be nice to kinda see who's who here in this tribe and get a little introductions going on here. So without further delay:

I VJ under the moniker of eNdo. I'm based in Phoenix, Arizona. I've been creating my own visuals using 3D Studio Max, After Effects and many other apps for about 6 years now. My rig consists primarily of a laptop running resolume, a behringer BCR2000 midi controller, and a Roland EF-303 Step Sequencer (also used to control midi). My main focus is visuals for Psytrance but I also really enjoy mixing to techno and breaks. You can check out some of my work here: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=ericg64420

cheers!

max/msp Jitter question

I just got Jitter and I absolutely love it! It's exactly what I've always wanted for doing live video work.

Just one small problem - I've got the 30-day trial running on my PC laptop. It works great but won't detect my DV camera. I've got the cam plugged into an external firewire card in my laptop's card slot. Other video programs recognize the video feed, but jitter doesn't seem to see it. I'm contemplating installing Jitter on my Mac laptop, where I suspect it will work just fine - but I don't want to be burning two 30-day trials at once. Plus, my PC is faster - dual-core 2 GHZ versus single core 1.3 GHZ.

Has anybody had this problem with Jitter for PC? And is there a solution? Or should I just switch to Mac?

The Art of Digital Show is a world-class international exhibition featuring digital painting, computer based illustration, video art, digitally manipulated photography, computer animation, interactive installations, CGI, etc. What is very unique about The Art of Digital Show is the combining of fine art images in the gallery along with video art. Flat-screen displays in the gallery will be continuously exhibiting the video art pieces.

The judge for this exhibit is Neal Benezra, who is the Director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He chose 104 pieces to be exhibited from 2796 entries submitted by artists representing 40 countries. Mr. Benezra has also selected 14 artists to receive a total of $3,500 in cash awards. The awards will be presented at the Opening Reception Gala.

Opening Reception Gala: There will be more than 1000 people at the Reception, so it's suggested that you arrive close to 6 p.m. This is a not-to-be-missed event!

Show Catalog: All attendees of the Opening Reception Gala will receive a free copy of the Show Catalog. This superb 72 page book showcases all of the exhibited images, has artists statements about each piece, and also includes a very illuminating "Forward" from Neal Benezra.

VJs wanted for Burning Man 2007

Hey! I am helping to gather VJ's to mix out at Opulent Temple at Burning Man this year.
I did it last year (and will again this year) and it was a blast. Great music and a killer set-up.
Read on!

VJs needed - Burning Man - Black Rock Desert - 27th August - 3th September

Hello everyone. We are looking for VJs to take 1-3 hour slots at Burning Man 2007 (if you are interested in a longer set just let us know). We are *ontheflyfilms and have been VJing for the Opulent Temple (www.opulenttemple.org) and Opel Productions (www.opelproductions.com) in San Francisco for many years. The Opulent Temple is on the 2 o'clock corner of Burning Man (check out the map at www.burningman.com - it's one of the two prime spots). Opulent Temple is one of the biggest sound camps on the playa.

Past guests on the decks in their famous flame throwing DJ booth 'the O Pod' include Tiesto, Stanton Warriors, Paul Oakenfold, Lee Coombs, DJ Dan, Hybrid, Sandra Collins, D:Fuse, The Scumfrog, Freq Nasty, Tipper, Josh Gabriel (of Gabriel & Dresden), Bassnectar (Lorin) and others.

Burning Man is a not for profit event, and thus none of us receive payment, but if you are planning to be at Burning Man, and want to jump in and mix a set, please send a demo reel to ot@ontheflyfilms.com (ideally we could visit a website, if you have to send a qt please keep it small), and we'll try to slot you in. I'll say this much, its a hell of a lot of fun.

We mix from sunset to sunrise from tuesday through saturday night. Help us blow it up. we are looking for experienced VJs. we will have at least one V4 mixer, and DVD players to match, we may have some live cameras, and there will be two 14' circular screens.

if you have any specific needs/desires please include them in your email. thanks! hope to see you on the playa! (note: if you want to join the opulent temple camp you can do so at www.opulenttemple.org for a small fee)

Programming video aplications

Hi. I intend to create a real-time video graphics application that will allow interaction with the audience. For years I've messed around with various programs and equipment but none of them do quite what I want so I've decided to create my own.

The trick is I need to learn how to program this stuff. I've got some programming experience, but little with graphics and none with video. I know I've got a long way to go before I'm creating innovative VJ software, but you gotta start somewhere, right?

So where do I start? What language(s) should I use? Where are good places to look for lessons, tuturials, and support for this stuff?

Thanks!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBsep4Xosk8

this is a short film i made in san francisco with spoken word/performance artist Chris Sia and Eugene Steele. It started out with Chris reading a list of all of these wartorn places in his van at Burning Man last year, and then he asked me to help him make a video, so we dug out a ton of samples and went to town.

our crew is A.P.T. (armageddon prevention team) and Kontrabrand is top secret, but suffice to say, you'll hear about it in the near future if you follow what i do at all.

enjoy!

Crosswired Performance 2 Audio/Visual/Architectural performances @ A+D Musuem LA

This is straight out of Flavorpill (why re-invent the wheel)
He may have destroyed dance floors around the world, but hometown hero Kenneth J Gibson — aka [a]pendics.shuffle — still belongs to LA. One of the most prolific electronic producers and DJs in the area, he throws down funky, twisted, psych-tinged minimal techno tonight in the second installment of the A+D Museum's Crosswired series — a new program showcasing LA's finest electronic music and vidz. Trace Element kicks things off, dropping a combo of Henry Strange's crunchy theremin breaks alongside the emotional violin mastery of Laura Escude. Direct from Istanbul, Todd Thille of VJ collective Artificial Eyes and VJ Culture's first 2007 LA performance.

Friday May 18th 2007
New York, New York

A.M. Bionik Proudly Presents:
Electric Clerics

A.M. Bionik strives to procure underground artists
and musicians whose live artesian performances
transform our interpretations of the known universe.
We are focusing our third eye on their tangible
artwork and musical sculptures. By cherishing quality
over quantity, we are cutting to the chase by offering
several hours of international music and VJ
performances. For that reason, we are very excited to
announce five live performing artists
for the *Electric Clerics* event.
Traveling from Warsaw, Poland for a debut performance is Kino Oko (Live!),
international live acts brought to you on an EAW, LA series speaker system
screaming for more! The event will begin promptly at 8pm with Psylab's 2
hour live improvisational performance. We will waste no time in getting

There are still a few slots open for performing at Rebirth 07 http://kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2007.html
Artists are also entitled to discount tickets into the event.

We could use a few VJ's for the event.

Unfortunately, like most Burning Man Events, this is not a paid gig.
However, if you needed a little bit more incentive to come take a Hawaii vacation... and want to perform at the regional event, let me know =)

Interested artists should contact me.

Thanks!

KLab9 Call for Contributions

KLab9 Call for Contributions
From KnowledgeLab
KLab9:Art - Technology, Authorship and Ways of Living
A weekend gathering for collaborative and creative reflection. 5th - 7th October, 2007 tbc.
Institute for Advanced Studies, Lancaster University, North West England.

INTRODUCTION

The Knowledge Lab is an attempt to provide a collective space for anti-capitalist reflection. It is located at the margin of the university, an institution essentially geared towards the production of knowledge as a resource for corporate interest and as justification for particular constellations of power relations.
This knowledge lab will address art and ways of critically thinking about our world. Within this broad region of enquiry, the lab will encompass notions of life and art as a political commitment, the influence art can exert in politics and how political ideas in turn influence art. It will also address new ways of making art and how this relates to technologies and social changes, and the use of art as an anti-capitalist means to change and fight the system.

We hope that the knowledge lab will not merely address, but also show that art can initiate critical thinking in the various guises outlined above. Our expectations, in terms of the event, and its outcome, are that this be a sharing of creative ideas and ideas about creativity. We hope that it will draw together people with a common interest in art and alternative ways of living, but working in different fields. From this collective thinking we hope that people will be incited to realize, or make manifest, some of these ways of living and thinking creatively when they leave: We will learn from each other.

STREAMS

Like previous knowledge labs the day will be divided into four streams, each will take place in a separate room.

STREAM 1: TECHNOLOGY Free software, art spaces and interfaces, hardware, DIY and recycling/reusing.

STREAM 2: WAYS OF LIVING This stream concerns process, moment and performance. It is the political stream where we will consider primarily imaginative resistance and artivism, but also touch on debates surrounding gender issues, community and cultural production, and personal/political. We hope to see papers touching on initiatives in direct democracy; the art of changing that system, and the paradigms of inspiration. We would like to discuss how artivism will change society, possibles networks of artivists, ways of action.

STREAM 3: AUTHORSHIP Copy rights, ownership, patenting, and appropriation. (Creative commons, Copyleft,...)

STREAM 4: THE ART MARKET (new ways of) curating, spaces (physical and virtual) to show art, ways of making money: Marketing, the means of production, market forces and anti-market forces, the art market, and art and ethics.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Each day will be split into two parts. On Saturday and Sunday morning papers will be presented in each of the four streams, each lasting 20-30 minutes. Papers will be followed by a brief question period of 10-15 minutes. The afternoon will be divided into discussion periods in each of the four streams. During the weekend there will also be a separate space for workshops and performances.
There are therefore a variety of ways to contribute to the weekend. See below for details:

ACADEMIC PAPERS

The list of streams is not prescriptive, it simply outlines some of the issues we envisage arising given the general themes.

Please also send papers on other themes, these will be gratefully considered.

Submit an abstract of no more than 500 words. In addition please enclose a brief biography. Try to make this, along with your paper, as accessible as possible.

FACILITATED DISCUSSIONS (INVOLVEMENT AND SKILLS SHARING)

If you have an idea for one of the afternoon discussion topics that links in with one of the four streams then send in a your idea and think about one of the two types of involvement below:

If you'd like to take a more pro-active role during the conference, you might want to ADOPT a session - that is, prepare it in advance (suggest questions, main issues, reading material etc and propose the length of the session), arrive prepared for discussion themselves, attend it, and participate passionately in the debates.

We also need people to FACILITATE sessions - ideally a session should NOT be adopted and facilitated by the same person(s). Consider that facilitators are usually best if experienced in their task. Any which way, please get in touch.

== WORKSHOPS, ARTWORKS, AND PERFORMANCES ==

These will broadly tie in with one of the four streams above. Send a proposal [Max: A single side of A4], elaborate on: What your contribution will be e.g. a workshop, a performance, an artwork. How long you envisage it taking. Do you need any equipment or materials? Do you want to limit the number of participants? If so, how many? What do you hope will be born out of this? How do you propose to arrive at this end?

SATURDAY EVENING

DJ and VJ session: Call for DJs and VJs to send in samples so they might come and contribute to an evening of art in many guises. As well as other music, visual, perfomance, etc artist and Artivist.
Nb. Groups are welcome to contribute workshops, materials for display and/or distribution.

INFORMATION

Anybody is welcome to attend the weekend, get involved in the discussions, and take part in the workshops. HOWEVER, YOU NEED TO REGISTER TO ATTEND AS THE EVENT IS LIMITED TO 100 PEOPLE, SO PLEASE GET IN TOUCH: klab9art@googlemail.com
Optimal Sizing for Video Images

I work at an advertising agency building reels of commercials for various uses and there are often beautiful cinematic moments in these commercials before the product is revealed so I've decided to start sampling these moments in hopes of stealing back their creative souls for later mixing. My question pertains to archiving them. Right now they're in 720X480 FCP QT Movies and are quickly taking up valuable space. What is the smallest size and format I can compress these to without having the quality of the outputted image effected? I'm thinking 320X240 .mp4?
I'm looking to buy a copy of Modul8 so I'll be using that when I get it, I've been using a demo of arkaos lately. cheers to the feedback. peace.

Reline 2 : DVD Review

Just up at : http://www.skynoise.net/
( great disc which seems to have many San Fran ( & inevitably tribe i presume; - )) connections, )
Reline 2 : DVD Review

Another disc full-o-mutant pixels hoofs over the horizon, this next galloper into town being the ‘difficult second album’ follow-up to the acclaimed Reline DVD compilation.

Curated by video artist Scott Pagano, Reline 1 contained a fantastic spectrum of lo-fi to hi-fi visual explorations, noodlings and generally provocative work. Although the sequel focusses much more on the expensive end of that spectrum, it still manages to provide quite a diversity of approaches, in line with the goal of showcasing “artists engaged in the creation of new visual forms deriving from experimental techniques and the re-orientation of high-end production processes.”
etc >> :- )

I think I just saw the best VJ show to music at the Soulclipse even in Turkey for the Solar Eclipse. The artists were Buzz-T and El Gecko and it rocked this world. The animation would have cost a hell of a lot of money for a mere mortal to create. There is a clip at http://www.chaishop.com/divers/frameset3.lasso

You may not like psytrance but I am glad that these two do, oh yeah and me.
So, do these work good? Are they reliable or do I need to shell out big bucks for something more high-end?
Just curious if anyone has any experiance with em...

I have a plan for a collaborative VJ exhibit at an upcoming gig here in Venice. I'd like to know if there's folks out there who would like to contribute some premixed clips, or would like to come on down and throw light up. It would be a VJ jam, a way of getting all sorts of unusual and unique work up on the walls to the sounds of some great beats and live performances.

As a bit of background, I was formerly a part of the Xeno (Xenodrome) crew up in SF, and have been working with David Starfire a bit...you can check out some of the work on his website....plus go here for some projects....

I am in the market for a new projector for mixin with and am trying to wade thru the huge field of projectors out there.
It seems a load of people over on VJForums are not too keen on DLP's because of the rainbowing effect.
Anyone around here have any take on that?
I had been looking at the NEC LT35 3000 Lumen XGA 1024 x 768 DLP. It seems to have a load of good features and seem bright as hell, and it gets some great reviews, BUT that is usually in some sort of "business" setting.

Just curious if people think maybe it is better to go with less lumens and LCD for the same price.
Any input or recommendations?

Addictive TV Wed. May 3rd SF CA

For those of you in the bay area.
Last night's Eye of the Pilot cinema performance was well executed and put together.
Live Cinema is hard to execute well. Most people including myself find it hard to sit down and watch a video that is non-narrative. No matter how well it is done people fall asleep, leave, whatever. I think the general public doesn't understand what it is. They are curious and want to check it out but they don't know what to expect.
Then when they see a couple of guys on stage gazing into their laptops and don't understand the correlation between the video and the artist they loose interest. I've seen it with some of the best A/V artists in the world. Addictive, Light Surgeons, Peter Greenaway. I think the answer is allowing the viewer to mediate their experience. Meaning, let them mingle, go to the bar, move from room to room. I know it breaks from the traditional viewing experience, but until we as artists have a full theatrical performance few people will really be interested.
Addictive TV's Wed night show is more of a club experience. I would be interested to see something in between their theatre show and the club show as an experiment. Maybe opening and closing parties for the Film Festivals is a better place for live cinema. It's not a dance party and it's not sit down experience, plus you have the attention of those likely interested in live cinema.
Don't get me wrong, "Eye of the Pilot" is brilliant and I encourage others to check it out if you get the chance.
But how can we as artists be more entertaining in a sit down performance environment?
Thoughts?
If you are in town check it out.
On Wednesday, May 3 Addictive TV will headline a party to end the KinoTek series: Addictive TV Eats San Francisco will take place at Mighty (119 Utah) at 9:00 pm. VJon/Lightrythm Visuals will open the show followed by Toronto imports Rawkshow. Addictive will then proceed to destroy Mighty, and then the city, leaving mayhem and chaos in their wake.

Presented in association with microcinema international with support from the French Cultural Services, Consulate General of France, San Francisco. Sponsored by Microcinema International and Res Media.

just noticedthis morning...
via my rss reader where i keep in touch with tribes...
"The moderator of this tribe has chosen not to expose this tribe via RSS syndication."

which was not something i did as moderator of this tribe, presumably some change s by tribe....

wandered around the settings and couldnt see how to change it back though....
holler if any other tribe moderators have an idea?

(this option was already ticked : Syndicate this tribe's discussion board (public or moderated tribes only)

hopefully back in your rss readers soon ;- )

Maker Faire VJ Battle 4/23 - call for participation

Call for Participation

Maker Faire VJ Battle
April 23, 3-5pm
San Mateo Expo Center

SF Bay Area VJs are invited to participate in the Maker Faire VJ Battle, one of the finale events at the Maker Faire, April 22-23 in San Mateo. This event promises to be a blast, and it will bring VJing to a broad, all-ages audience of creative techies.

The format is eight contestants, competing in seven four-minute elimination rounds, with performances scored along specific criteria by three judges. You can read the full set of rules and other info on the Maker Faire website, at:
http://makezine.com/pub/ev/319

There's gonna be great technical and logistical support for the VJ Battle. It's taking place in the "Maker's Lounge" area of the Faire, where many of the music and A/V performances are happening. This area will have twin screens and 5K lumen projectors, a matrix router, a good PA with a dedicated sound engineer, groovy lighting, and an elevated extended stage with room for all the VJs competing. VJs can set up ahead of time, and the building and premises will have security.

About Maker Faire

[copied from Tim O'Reilly posting]

Maker Faire is coming up April 22-23 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. It is part science fair, part craft fair, part county fair, with a dash of Burning Man for good measure. It's a spinoff of our Make: magazine, which Steven Levy of Newsweek described as "Martha Stewart for Geeks" -- a DIY technology projects magazine akin to the old Popular Mechanics of the 50's, but updated for the digital era.

We are absolutely blown away by the people and attractions we will have at the Faire: a flying Pterosaur replica, a flock of whale blimps, a giant painting machine, DIY RFID implants, model rocketry, breadboarding, trailer-glass blowing, The Crucible's welding workshops off the back of fire truck, pinhole photography, soldering, spud gun building, bubble machines and a bubble guy that appeared on Johnny Carson in the 70's, Bunnie Huang, Joe Grand, William Gurstelle and his Backyard Ballistics, The Exploratorium, Zeum, The Lunar Society (rocket builders), Graffiti Research Lab, Squid Labs biodiesel, electric cars, a Linux supercomputer cluster running on veggie oil, neon art, circuit bending, VJs, slide rules, pinball restoration, the Phenomenauts, Satan's Calliope .... and much, much more. Quite an eclectic collection. That's not to mention Diana Eng of Bravo's Project Runway and the fifty craft booths in Bazaar Bizarre and the Swap-o-Rama-Rama.

CNN, NPR Science Friday's Ira Flatow, KPIX TV , Discover Magazine, CBS News, The Discovery Channel, New York Times, Kevin Rose of Digg and digg.com and CNET will be covering the event. It's designed to be a family event (admission is only $12), and we're hoping to attract tens of thousands of people to celebrate the fun of science and engineering and by sharing the amazing work being done in backyards, garages, and homebrew labs. http://www.makezine.com/faire has more information.

For those of you not in California, people will be blogging the heck out of this thing, and there's a Make photo pool on Flickr as well, so you should be able to get a taste of the action.

Terrastock 6 looking for visuals, April 22-24 in Providence RI

Hi everyone,

Terrastock is a 3 day psychedellic (very loosely defined) music festival that is taking place in Providence RI this year at 2 adjacent venues over the weekend of April 22-24. I was in charge of coordinating visuals for the 5th one that they did about 3 years ago in Boston. This year, the organizers decided they didn't have a budget for visuals (um...we did it for free at the last one...) until other participants found out and started squawking about this decision. I can't commit to the whole weekend again especially at such late notice but I thought I'd try to help them out a bit and post here to see if anyone is interested in showing up and doing their thing. Count on not getting paid, but probably being able to attend the festival for the weekend, and bringing your own equipment.

Drop me a private line here on Tribe and I'll hook you up with whoever you need to be hooked up with.

I'm a live camera artist and I'd be up for collaborating with any of you for a set on Sat. or Sunday if you want to incorporate a live feed into your mix.

Info about the festival: http://www.terrascope.co.uk/TerrastockPages/terrastock6.html

custom VJ midi controller

Has anyone hacked a broken midi keyboard into a custom VJ midi rig?

I'm thinking about trolling the net for like a broken radium or something and junking the body in favor of my own layout.

I figure that way I can make all the keys into toggle switches, and put the knobs above the sliders.. (well this is a theory, I have to pull one apart to find out if the boards are modular or a solid straight shot..

anyone have any good ideas about custom midi hardware? What is a good piece of hardware to find broken that has good salvageable knobs and sliders?

thanks
